Black Friday Saw A Big Increase In Online Sales
Monday, 28 November 2011
Black Friday has come and gone. Traditionally, it is one of the biggest shopping days in the United States with massive discounts gracing the shelves and inventories of stores nationwide. This year was no exception. In fact, according to ShopperTrak, the gains were the strongest they have been since 2007 with a 6.6% overall increase in sales.
Impressively, online sales, which totaled $816 million, jumped up 26% from last year noted comScore. This falls in line with the large increase in online visitors, 50 million, making for a 35% increase from last year.
The uptick in mobile use that has been trending all year long continued on Friday. Mobile device orders accounted for 9.8% of online orders, which only made up 3.2% of last year’s order.
Apple played a big role, with 10% of overall online activity coming from their iPhone or iPads. Shoppers who used an iPad were most likely to make a purchase, ringing up a 4.6% conversion rate compared to the 2.8% from mobile phones.
With all that in mind, it should be interesting to see how Cyber Monday turns out. Last year it saw $1 billion in online sales, which made it the biggest day of online spending ever, according to comScore.
