Certona participates in Computer Science Education Week – Spreads Passion to San Diego Youth

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela.

At Certona we couldn’t agree more which is why our technology team participated in the Computer Science Education Week at Double Peak K-8 School in San Diego, CA.

Certona software developer, Lee Blackwell, spent a day with 6th grade math students of Double Peak K-8 to share her passion for computer science. Lee noted how, “as I talked about what Certona does, it was exciting to see these bright students easily understand how we provide recommendations and personalize the online shopping experience.”

During Computer Science Education Week students participate in the nationwide “The Hour of Code,” an opportunity for every student to try computer science for one hour.  As a way to enhance the hour of code, schools bring in guest speakers to help solidify the message and show what the future holds if they stick down the path of Math and Science.

Lee led the kids in an unplugged programming activity where they took turns as robot and programmer with a goal of motioning the “YMCA.” The fun and engaging activity drove home the concept that machines operate on a specific predefined set of instructions. “I can’t tell you how great it is to hear one of the students eagerly tell me that she’s working on a website with her dad and another student who was able to provide the textbook definition of a “loop.” Warms the programmer’s heart.”

Our passion for big data, AI, and all things computer science is what creates the backbone of our technology. For over a decade, our passion for leveraging computer science to innovate and change traditional e-commerce interactions has resulted in important changes to the retail industry. We’re lucky to have talented employees, like Lee, who are passionate not only about what they do but passionate about making a better tomorrow for today’s future, our youth.
